After a decade of loading trucks across the North Island, our crews have picked up more than a few tricks for making moving day less chaotic. Some are obvious once you hear them. Others are the kind of thing almost nobody thinks of until it’s too late. Here are ten we swear by.

Moving house is consistently ranked as one of life’s more stressful events — and most of that stress comes down to poor planning rather than the physical work itself. The good news is that a handful of small habits can take a chaotic week and turn it into a manageable one.

1. Label boxes by room, not by contents

Writing “kitchen” on a box is far more useful on move-in day than listing every item inside. Movers can place boxes directly in the right room without needing to ask, which shaves real time off both ends of the move.

2. Use colour-coded tape or stickers

Assign each room a colour and mark it with a strip of tape on the box. It’s faster to scan a colour than to read a label, especially when you’re carrying two boxes and trying to keep the dolly steady on the way in.

3. Pack a “first night” box separately

Toiletries, a change of clothes, phone chargers, basic tools, and any medication should travel with you rather than in the truck. It sounds obvious, but it’s the box people forget most often — and the one you’ll want within arm’s reach the second you walk through the door.

4. Photograph your electronics before unplugging

A quick photo of the cable setup behind your TV or router saves twenty minutes of guesswork later. Do the same for flat-pack furniture before you dismantle it.

“The best move is the boring one — nothing left behind, nothing broken, nobody stressed.”

5. Use towels and linens as padding

Instead of buying extra bubble wrap, wrap fragile items in the towels, blankets, and clothing you’re already packing. It protects your breakables and means one less box to carry.

6. Keep a “do not pack” zone

Set aside one corner of a room — clearly marked — for anything that should never go in a box: passports, keys, laptop chargers, and valuables. It keeps them out of the shuffle entirely.

7. Disassemble large furniture the night before

Bed frames, wardrobes, and dining tables take longer to take apart than most people expect. Doing it the evening before moving day — rather than at 7am with the truck outside — keeps the morning calm and on schedule.

8. Confirm parking and access in advance

A truck that can’t get close to the door adds hours to a move. Check for parking restrictions, apartment lift bookings, or narrow driveways at both ends, and let your moving team know ahead of time so they can plan accordingly.

9. Defrost the fridge 24 hours out

It’s easy to forget until the last minute. Defrosting and cleaning your fridge a full day before moving day means it’s dry, odour-free, and ready to load without any mess.

10. Let the professionals handle the heavy lifting

The single biggest time-saver is simply booking a moving team you trust. It frees you up to manage the details that actually need your attention, while the physical work is handled safely and efficiently by people who do it every day.

None of these hacks are complicated, but together they add up to a moving day that runs on schedule instead of running you ragged. For more ways to prepare, take a look at our full Moving House Checklist.
